Introduction

As an incorrigible bibliophile, I have collected a number of specimens of very old books during my lifetime, the oldest so far dating back to 1773. Some are works by classic, well-known authors. Others have long been forgotten. In some cases, perhaps their obscurity is deserved, in other cases perhaps not.

Why not share these dusty voices with the world again?

That will be the purpose of this little blog, nothing more, nothing less.

Hurrah!

on topic....

this came in an email to me this morning from a subscription I have to Artists' Botany Newsletter
(sept 2007 issue):

Dissecting Books: Is It Okay to Remove Pages for Your Collection?

The current issue of Fine Books & Collections magazine features an interesting article about the practice of disassembling books and the practice of collecting fragments to create new "editions" of a book. The question at hand, of course, is whether or not these practices are acceptable.

According to writer Karen Edwards, the American Library Association, the Association of College and Research, the Antiquarian Booksellers' Asociation of America, and the International League of Antiquarian Booksellers do not prohibit the purchase or sale of book parts (i.e., illustrations, plates, etc.). Only the American Institute for Conservation suggests that "cultural property" should be cared for in a way that does not encourage its deterioration.

The harvesting of book parts is a practice that goes back several hundred years. Books whose pages were comprised of vellum or parchment were often disassembled so that the pages could be reused. The reuse of pages such as these, required the careful removal of ink. Pages that have had ink removed so that they could be reused are called palimpsests (pah-limp-sests).

Edwards interviewed several booksellers for her article and shares their views about book parts, how they are collected, and how they are used. To read this article in its entirety, go to Fine Books & Collections to order the September/October 2007 back issue.

Removing book pages? Gaaah -- what an awful idea.

Thanks, Kat, for the article tip -- and for being the first commentator on this new blog.
